Homework

At BWA, we set homework as we believe it supports your child with their learning in the classroom and to be confident independent learners. The table below sets out our weekly homework expectations for your child which we hope is helpful and clear. The expectations are applicable to pupils in the bilingual stream in their English week.

 

Reception
  What is the homework? When is homework assigned and due? Where homework should be completed? How should homework be checked?
Guided Reading Pupils are assigned a guided reading text to read with support and complete an activity based on it.

Pupils are assigned their guided reading homework on their allocated guided reading day.

Guided reading homework is due the following week on the same day it was assigned.

Pupils complete the activity in their reading record.

Parents/carers are encouraged to support their children to read their guided reading text and complete the homework task. Once completed, the reading record can be signed at home.

Pupils’ guided reading texts should be read repeatedly over the week that they have it.

Teachers will check guided reading homework in the pupils weekly guided reading session in school.

Independent Reading

Pupils bring home a book from the class library to share with their adult. This is an opportunity for discussion.

Pupils may be assigned additional reading on Bug Club.

Pupils are encouraged to read for 10-15 minutes daily.

This can be independently once the pupils can read or being read to by an adult.

Pupils choose a book with their Teacher.

Bug Club is assigned online and login details can be found are in reading records.

Parents/carers are encouraged to read with their child daily. Once the book is complete, the reading record can be signed at home.

Teachers will check that books are being read at home.

Spelling

Pupils are assigned words to learn at home.

The focus is on learning to read and write these.

Pupils are assigned spelling words to learn on their guided reading day and should be practised daily.

Words to learn can be found in reading records. Words to learn will be checked by the Teacher.

 

Year 1

Teachers will check Mathletics homework every Friday.

Maths Task

Pupils are assigned a maths tasks based on number bonds from 10-20.

This will move onto skip counting tasks in the Summer term.

Pupils are assigned two maths tasks on a Monday and Wednesday.

Maths tasks are due the following day.
Maths tasks can be found in maths homework books.

Parents/carers are encouraged to complete the Maths tasks with their children.  

Teachers will check maths tasks homework on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Spelling

Pupils are assigned spelling words to learn at home.

Pupils are assigned spelling words to learn on their guided reading day and should be learned daily.

Words to learn can be found in reading records.

Words to learn will be tested weekly every Friday in a dictation at school.  

 

Year 2

Parents/carers are encouraged to check that reading has been completed and comprehension questions have been answered. Once checked, the reading record can be signed at home.
