Belleville Wix Academy

Our Local Governing Board

‘Support through challenge’

Belleville Wix Academy opened in August 2017 as part of the Quality First Education (Q1E) Trust. There is a Board of Trustees which oversees all of the schools in the Trust. The Trust Scheme of Delegation sets out how certain roles and responsibilities are delegated to the local governors of each school.

In January 2018 we established a Local Governing Body (LGB) for Belleville Wix Academy, to whom the Trustees delegate certain roles and powers. The LGB is currently delegated responsibility for curriculum & standards and safeguarding. This includes attendance, pupil welfare and health and safety. Finance and staffing is currently the direct responsibility of the Trust.

The LGB includes local staff governors (elected by the school staff), local parent governors (elected by the school's parent body) and co-opted local governors (appointed by the local governing body and/or the Trustees, because they have the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school). The headteacher also sits on the local governing body. We currently have one vacancy for an additional co-opted local governor and hope to make an appointment shortly

We meet twice a term to discuss the progress being made by the school on its school improvement journey. At these meetings the senior leadership team provide us with reports and data. It is our job as governors to use our skills and training to demonstrate our understanding of the strengths and weaknesses which the school is dealing with. To ensure that the LGB can do this properly each governor takes a special link responsibility for one aspect of our statutory responsibility or school improvement priority. We make it a priority to visit the school and find out more from experts in the school and the Trust about our link area.  Governors are also required to read around their link area and attend training sessions. Our aim is to be able to ask challenging questions which come from a place of secure, valid, up to date and relevant understanding of the key issues facing our school. Our role as governors is thus designed to provide ‘support through challenge’

If you would like to contact the governors please ask at the school reception where you can leave a message for Kate Amis, Chair of the LGB.

Governance is both rewarding and challenging, and I am passionate about the capacity of governance to support Belleville Wix on its school improvement journey. To help me get to know the children and staff at our school  I have been coming in to help with reading every week which has been great fun.

I am an ex teacher now working in outreach projects in the School of Geography at Queen Mary University.   I have lived in the Clapham area for 30 years and my three children attended Wandsworth schools.

I was a governor at Belleville for many years and whilst chair of governors there was designated a National Leader of Governance which gave me the opportunity to support a wide variety of schools.

I am also a governor at Penwortham School in Tooting and I am a board member of the Q1E trust.

I was co-opted to the Belleville Wix Local Governing Board in March 2019. I live very close to the school and currently work for Wandsworth Council in Children’s Services. My role sits within both the Virtual School and the Leaving Care Team as I support looked after children and care leavers with education, employment and engagement. I am also currently working towards my Certificate in Counselling Studies at Merton College.

Since graduating in 2012 I have worked for two educational charities supporting schools with carrying out both local and global projects. I engaged over 300 schools with an active citizenship programme and managed the portfolio consisting of primary, secondary, SEND schools and Pupil Referral Units.

My main passion is to improve social mobility by raising self-esteem and aspiration. I believe every young person has the right to achieve their full potential no matter their socio-economic background and that is what drives me. I am a huge advocate for community cohesion, living, working and volunteering in the borough of Wandsworth. I look forward to supporting Belleville Wix as a Local Governor.

I have been interested in becoming a school governor for some time, due to a keen interest in education and a desire to contribute positively to my local community. I have lived in the Clapham area for around five years, and was co-opted as an associate governor of Belleville Wix in March 2019. My parents have both spent their careers working in schools and universities, and their work has led me to recognise the importance of a good education, as well as giving me some appreciation of the challenges.

My professional background is in law; I am currently a trainee solicitor at Allen & Overy and have spent time in the firm’s London and Paris offices. I studied History and French at Durham University, spending a year working as an English teacher in Burgundy, so Belleville Wix’s bilingual stream particularly interests me. I have been very impressed by all that I have seen of the school and look forward to helping the governors and staff achieve its objectives.

I have a keen interest in the future of our education system and have a desire to give back to our local community. I have lived in Battersea since 2017 and was co-opted to the Belleville Wix Local Governing Body in September 2019. As a bilingual in English and Mandarin, I understand some of the opportunities and challenges growing up with two sets of cultures, languages and principles. The French bilingual stream particularly interests me as some of my family are French.
I work at Fulcrum Asset Management specialising in alternative investments and have been in the finance industry since 2012. I studied MSc Accounting & Finance at the London School of Economics as well as BSc Mathematics with Management & Finance at King’s College London.

Elected staff governor
Link governor for writing

I have been working as part of the Wix team since 2013, initially as a Learning Support Assistant, and after completing a PGCE course at Kingston University, I am now a class teacher. Previously, I worked as a radio producer at Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra, as well as teaching English as a second language in South Korea for five years.

Having witnessed the changes that our school has gone through over the last five years, I volunteered to represent the staff on the board of governors because I am passionate about our school and the direction it takes going forward. I am proud to be part of the fantastic team at Wix and I feel strongly that we now have the systems and support framework in place to help us to become one of the premier Primary schools in our area.

Staff governor

I have been working as part of the Belleville Wix staff team since 2018, as the Year 4 class teacher. I have enjoyed embedding myself into the school and worked to be a part of the team that achieved our brilliant Ofsted grading in 2019. The school ethos for a relentless drive for excellence is clearly evident in everything that we do at Belleville Wix, giving our children the best opportunity to reach their full potential.

Having witnessed the fantastic progress that the school has made since I joined, I applied for the role as staff governor in the spring term of 2019 as I am passionate about continuing to improve our school. I am an active part in the creation and development of our ‘World Class’ curriculum and have a particular interest in how we can develop a digital learning strategy that will enhance the learning for all children in the school. I am proud to be a part of the fantastic staff team that we have at Belleville Wix Academy and am I confident that as a school community we can continue to achieve every goal we set for ourselves. â€‹"

Parent Govenor

I have lived in Battersea for the last 16 years. I have a degree in Geographical Science and a professional background in information technology. I now specialise in information security and work for a multinational media holding company.

We have one son who is currently in year two at Belleville Wix Academy.

I wanted to become a school governor as I believe it is important to be involved with and contribute to the school community. I can see how happy our son has been since starting in reception which is a tribute to the team at the school. I look forward to working with the other governors and staff of the school to build on the fantastic work that has already been done."

Parent governor

I was elected as a local parent governor at Bellville Wix Academy in 2017. My family has been a part of this school community since 2015, when my oldest child began in the reception class. In the coming school year all three of my children will attend Bellville Wix Academy, so I am extremely invested in seeing our school reach its full potential. I am currently a stay at home mother, having previously worked in marketing and project management on Wall Street in the US before our family moved to London. I am adept at listening to others to interpret a vision, and then mobilizing the resources and key individuals needed to produce something that is meaningful and tangible. I am honored to be on the first governing body since we have become part of the Quality First Education Trust. I wanted to be a school governor because I understand the importance of parent involvement and holding the leadership team accountable to reach their goals of transforming our school into one that is outstanding. From the start, I have felt that our school is very special, diverse, rich in culture and a true community. Since joining the academy I can already see the start of many great things to come. I am committed to putting my skills and enthusiasm to work to help make Bellville Wix Academy the best place that it can be for our children.
